I bet you already seen more than a few who shouldn't be on the list.
on Mar 14, 2007
How many do I own physically? Own digitally? Own ummm... semi-legitimately digitally?
on Mar 14, 2007
I own or have owned twenty-seven.

That, and their list sucks. I could make you a list a mile long of bands that should be on this list, and there is plenty on there that shouldn't be. I mean, come on people, the Beatles aren't that cool. Not six or seven albums out of 200 essentials cool. I don't even think they're one out of the 200 cool, but that's just me.

Ones that it's a travesty aren't on there that are essential for any true rock fan:

"Blackwater Park" by Opeth
"In Absentia" by Porcupine Tree
"The Human Equation" by Ayreon
"Second-Life Syndrome" by Riverside
"Disconnected" by Fates Warning
"Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensryche
"Powerslave" by Iron Maiden

Many others . . .

Can I disagree with the first one?

Same group, Magical Mystery tour.

Will get back on the rest.  But as you can see, I am not the list.

Only about 75 or so if you count family owned vinyl from the 60's and 70's.
You can leave out pop crud please.
come on now, Never Mind the Bollocks? It was historic but it was n't really good music.
on Mar 14, 2007
Wow, man, it is a heck of a list and extremely subjective. Out of the 200, Toni and I currently own 28. There are probably another 30 or so on the list I would own and another 30 or so I have previously owned. I would never own any Metallica (I'm just not that angry), Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Shakira, Avril or anything that remotely smells like a boy or girl band. In fact, a good third of the list I wouldn't accept as gifts from anyone and if friends or family gave them to me, I'd wonder if they knew me at all.

As for San Chonino's comments about the Beatles, I have to say I disagree completely (you young whippersnapper ). There were as many Beatles entries as there were Led Zeppelin (both had 5) and as many Metallica entries as Rolling Stones (both had 4). Personally, I can't see why so many of one band, regardless of who they were or are, made it into this list. Surely, out of ALL the music that has been recorded in the last, oh, lets say, 60 odd years, there are plenty more albums by individual bands or artists that could be considered 'definitive'? And don't even get me started on soundtracks. Why any even made it into the list is beyond me.

Of those I own, about the only favourite would be London Calling by The Clash. If I were compiling the list, I would have included Sublime, Gorillaz, RunDMC, Grand Master Flash, The Specials, The Cure, INXS, Midnight Oil, Talking Heads and heaps of other bands.

I have 7 of those albums. Most of them are from before I was even born, or at least before I was musically aware (mid-90s). And they really haven't aged well.

They're missing classic albums by the Prodigy, by Basement Jaxx, DJ Shadow, the Gorillaz, the granddaddies of pop-emo My Chemical Romance, Wolfmother's missing... It's a shambles. I'm guessing whoever compiled it is in their late 40s and, since their 25th birthday, listened solely to commercial radio.

I have always thought that Pink Floyd "The Wall" is pretty overrated.

We have many of these albums at my house. I am a little surprised that more Queen albums didn't make it. I'd suggest "Sheer Heart Attack", "Jazz", and "A Day at the Races".

At one time or the other between me and wifey have had quite a few on the list. Heh, mostly in 8 tracks!

greywar,
How many do I own physically? Own digitally? Own ummm... semi-legitimately digitally?

Either or.

San Chonino,
That, and their list sucks. I could make you a list a mile long of bands that should be on this list, and there is plenty on there that shouldn't be. I mean, come on people, the Beatles aren't that cool. Not six or seven albums out of 200 essentials cool. I don't even think they're one out of the 200 cool, but that's just me.

I have those Beatle albums. On these lists they should limit one album to a group. That way there would be more artists listed.

You know I thought for sure you would have mentioned 'Moving Pictures'.

Doc,
Can I disagree with the first one?
Same group, Magical Mystery tour.

No Moody Blues at number one for you? What kind of fan is that?

Gid,
(Citizen)Gideon MacLeish

Thanks for taking the time to doing each album. It was cool seeing your musical tastes and some comments were hilarious.

SSG,
Only about 75 or so if you count family owned vinyl from the 60's and 70's.
You can leave out pop crud please.
come on now, Never Mind the Bollocks? It was historic but it was n't really good music.

I think it's up there because it was influential to a lot of other bands.

Cacto,

I have all but DJ Shadow. Does it count if someone burnt me Endtroducing...? Maybe when they do the list again 10 years from now they will include some of those bands. Maybe.

Mark,
In fact, a good third of the list I wouldn't accept as gifts from anyone and if friends or family gave them to me, I'd wonder if they knew me at all.

I would love to see your facial expression if they did.

There were as many Beatles entries as there were Led Zeppelin (both had 5) and as many Metallica entries as Rolling Stones (both had 4). Personally, I can't see why so many of one band, regardless of who they were or are, made it into this list. It's why I told Braeden the list should be limited to one artist one album. Too many good ones were omitted.

Speaking of Talking Heads, it would be cool if they reunited.

Jamie,
I have always thought that Pink Floyd "The Wall" is pretty overrated.

I have always liked Floyd. The Wall isn't my favorite but I do like listening to it in it's entirety every now and then.

We have many of these albums at my house. I am a little surprised that more Queen albums didn't make it. I'd suggest "Sheer Heart Attack", "Jazz", and "A Day at the Races".

I don't know if they should have multiple picks up there, but I do know they are often underrated.

Shovel,
At one time or the other between me and wifey have had quite a few on the list. Heh, mostly in 8 tracks!

I had almost 300 8-tracks in mint condition some years back and sold them to my cousin for $1.50 apiece. Hell, I wish I had them back. I wonder how much they're worth now.

(what? No Wild Cherry? lol)

Do you want me to play that funky music, white boy? lol
